The AI assistant inside documents

Ask questions about what you're reading without leaving the document viewer.

May 21, 2026

The AI Assistant is the in-document version of Chat. It lives in a side panel of the document viewer and includes the passage you're reading as context for your questions — so answers are focused on what's in front of you.

Open the assistant

In the document viewer, click Chat in the header to open the side panel.

The assistant uses the same chat pipeline as the main Chat feature, so answer quality and citation format are identical.

What to ask

  • "Summarize this chapter." — Quick orientation when you open a long document.
  • "What's the main argument on page 23?" — Skip ahead to the gist.
  • "How does the author define this term?" — Spot definitions without manual hunting.
  • "What's the historical context for this section?" — Bring in background information when relevant.

The assistant can also reference other documents in your Library when they're directly relevant. The References list will include both the current document and any others it pulled from.

Following citations

Numbered citations in an assistant response open the cited passage in a new tab so you can read the surrounding context.

Conversation history

Assistant conversations are saved to your chat history alongside chats started from the Chat page. You can revisit them later from outside the document.
