Attaching files mid-chat

Attach a PDF, image, or text snippet to a single chat message.

May 21, 2026

You can attach a one-off file to a chat message so the AI considers it alongside your question. Attachments live only on that message — they aren't ingested into your Library.

If you want a document to be fully searchable, citable across many chats, and visible in your Library, upload it normally from Uploads → Upload — see Uploading documents overview.

How to attach

  1. Open Chat from the sidebar.
  2. Click the paperclip icon next to the input and pick a file (or drag it onto the input).
  3. The file appears as a chip above the input. Type your question and send.

What works best

  • PDFs — research papers, scans, or short book chapters.
  • Images — photos of pages, screenshots of slides, or handwritten notes.
  • Short text snippets — paste short passages directly into the message body instead.

Very large files or full audio recordings are better uploaded into your Library through the normal upload flow.

Privacy

Attachments are processed by the same chat pipeline as your messages. They are not added to your Library and are not used to train any AI model. See Is my data used to train AI? for the full data-handling story.
